What the comparison shows

Without scaffold conditioning (red bars)

Both learners end up at similar proficiency because the flat model counts every correct answer equally. The tutored learner looks just as strong as the independent one. You can’t tell the tutor was doing the heavy lifting.

With scaffold conditioning (black bars)

The tutored learner’s proficiency climbs slower because hint-assisted answers carry less weight. The independent learner climbs faster on unaided evidence. The gap is the measurement of transfer — what the student can do alone.

For intervention researchers: If you’re evaluating a tutoring program, the flat model says the treatment worked. The tempered model tells you whether the learning transferred when the tutor wasn’t present. That’s the difference between measuring compliance and measuring understanding.
